THEORIES on the ORIGIN of the PHILIPPINES:
1. LAND BRIDGES THEORY
Some scientists believe that the Philippines used to be attached to mainland Asia by land bridges. They theorize that during the Ice Age or Pleistocene, about 250,000 years ago, the water surrounding the Philippines receded to about 156 feet below its present level. A vast land was exposed and became the land bridges to mainland Asia.
2. SUNDA SHELF THEORY
Other scientists believe that during the Plesitocene period, the Philippines was part of the Sunda Shelf. The Sunda Shelf is a platform or extension of mainland Southeast Asia that lies around 100 meters beneath the surface of the sea. It is a southward extension of mainland Southeast Asia with an area of about 1,800,000sq.km. Shallow seas, including the southern part of South China Sea, the Gulf of Thailand, and the Java Sea, cover most of the platform.
3. THE CONTINENTAL DRIFT THEORY
According to Alfred Wegener, a German meteorologist, the earth's continents, some 300 million years ago, were joined together in a single continent called Pangaea. At some point, the continents split apart and began to drift or move away from each other to where they are today. The evidences gathered by Wegener were quite convincing because if the continents were to be put together, they would appear as one.
4. THE PLATE TECTONICS THEORY
According to this theory, scientists believe that the outer shell of the earth is made up of thin, rigid plates that move relative to each other. Tectonic plates are made of either oceanic or continental crust and the very top part of the mantle, which is a layer of rock inside the earth.
5. VOLCANIC THEORY
Other scientists claim that there occurred a period of violent tectonic changes. They theorized that 225 million years ago, there occurred strong earthquakes and strong volcanic eruptions in the sea floor, the Philippine islands emerged. These violent activities caused the Philippine islands to separate and some areas to rise.
